Peace Mantra Chant 1 // Saha nav avatu

Peace mantra 1 sahana

Dear Goa Flow-er(s)

Here is the first Peace (Shanti) Chant i use as an invocation in my yoga classes. I first learned this chant while studying at the Bihar School of Yoga in India.

I love chanting these Peace mantras and my students love it as well. Below you will find an audio recording of me chanting together with my students at the Life Centre in London.

I use the chanting as a way to the set the tone at the beginning of class. I find the vibration creates resonance and a deep connection between everyone in the class. It feels like it brings us all into a cohesive unit to work from. It’s so beautiful and makes such a difference.

I find it best to use the call-and-response technique so everyone has a chance to join in, regulars as well as new students. I always give the translation after the chanting so everyone knows what they chanted, but i abbreviate it a bit, (so it doesn’t take too much time from the class). Below you will find the complete translation.

I hope you will chant along with us and integrate this into your practice.

Let me know how it goes.

Love & Light,
Anita Goa 🙂

Oṃ saha nāv avatu
saha nau bhunaktu
saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai
tejasvi nāv adhītam astu
mā vidviṣāvahai |
Om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||

Aum! May He protect us both together; may He nourish us both together;
May we work conjointly with great energy,
May our study be vigorous and effective;
May we not mutually dispute (or may we not hate any).
Aum! Let there be peace in me!
Let there be peace in my environment!
Let there be peace in the forces that act on me!
